Dear Parishioner
For many reasons, and particularly since the mid-sixties, the older and younger generations have become progressively disconnected from each other – at an individual, family and community level. Ageism is now inherent in our society and the fact that our modern way of life seems designed to separate the generations rather than bringing them together, does not improve the situation. Traditional family mealtimes are also, sadly, becoming an exception. It is because the generations have less natural contact that misunderstandings between them are allowed to grow and largely unfounded and negative attitudes are therefore not countered by real knowledge and experience.
With the above in mind a ‘Generations Together’ Luncheon Club has been successfully organised in our parish. This provides an ideal opportunity for younger people – mainly 6th formers from the Ursuline High School and Wimbledon College – and older people from the Sacred Heart Parish and surrounding area to meet; enjoy lunch together and exchange life experiences in a safe, friendly and supportive setting. The project is of educational value to both age groups and, by making a positive attempt to promote greater understanding and respect between the generations, destructive negative stereotypes have been broken down. Research has also highlighted the fact that similar activities have resulted in mutually rewarding experiences and young people’s personal skills development has been enhanced. Furthermore, the joy of reciprocity in knowledge-sharing also leads to a deepening of moral and spiritual values.
The ‘Generations Together’ Luncheon Club takes place on Fridays during term- time in the Lower Parish Hall, commencing at 1 p.m. Any senior member of the parish who is interested in attending the Luncheon Club is warmly invited to contact either The Presbytery 020 8946 0305 or Sheila Gent 020 8390 0119 for any further information required and for details regarding dates and reservations. For catering purposes, booking in advance is requested – by the preceding Wednesday, if possible.
In addition, any parishioner able to help with the organisation of the Luncheon Club on a rota basis would be most welcome to get in touch with Sheila Gent.
Our ‘Generations Together’ Luncheon Club has proved to be extremely popular and I regard it as an outstanding way of supporting the parish community.
