Some more photos from the church taken on 2 August. There has been a change of plans which will extend the work a bit but make long term significant savings. The original plan was for the contractors to paint the lower part of the nave's external walls. In addition they were required to clean the whole church. Since the equipment needed to clean the higher parts of the church can also be used to paint the upper part of the church it has been decided to paint the whole church. They started this week cleaning and then painting. The rest of the work that needs to be done will not dirty the church, so we can clean now. This will delay a bit the laying of the under-floor heating, the pouring of the screed and the laying of the oak wood floor. We should now be back in the church in mid-November.
The cherry picker in the church allows the church to be cleaned in the higher parts. A close up shows the work being done. Here is another picture showing the heights reached. The next two pictures attempts to show how the dirt has gone everywhere. See here and here.
Meanwhile progress continues in the ducts around the edge of the nave. The heating for the side radiators are now functioning in the ducts and were being tested while I visited. The connections to each radiator were also being readied. In this photo you can see the insulated heating pipes and the piping to the radiators. In addition you can see the black tubing which includes all the wiring we need throughout the church for the sound system, the loop system, and optic cable for future capability in multimedia presentations. At key points they are making access to the ducts possible. See here the corner by the stairs to the choir loft. A bit of screed will be laid inside and then the oak. Only a little metal border will be seen on the finished surface. The new radiators are ready. They are mostly refigured from the old ones.
The control room for the church heating beneath the side of the English Martyrs; Altar is seen here and in this picture you can see the old pipes which will be removed soon.
The actual boilers are in the hall complex. Here is where the new pipe work for the church is connected to the pipes to the boiler. This is just to the left of the church entrance. The old steps to this access area. This will be redone soon.
I was able to get up to the organ gallery and took some pictures of the organ and one down into the church.
UPDATE:
Here are a few photos taken the afternoon of the 10 August. The painting has started. Pardon the blurry picture, caused by a faulty photographer in a hurry and the dismal afternoon. Despite that, you can see the need of the painting. They will put three coats on the walls.
I have also taken a picture of the whole contraption which has allowed the cleaning and painting. Remember this picture when we return after the new oak floor has been laid, the restored pews return and the organ is reinstalled. Then, it will be hard to imagine what the church looked like in August 2010.
I will not be able to post any pictures in the next few weeks for I will be back in the US. I hope to see some dramatic change when I reurn in early September.

Church photos
What amazing photos for which many thanks
Would they come to my house with their cherry picker to clean the parts I cannot reach?
Church renovations
Hmm. Something of a lost opportunity, methinks. The (admittedly very fine) organ could do with some better casework, and the chancel needs to be remodelled to something approaching its pre-Vatican II state. Altar "ad orientem", IE you can't face the congregation!, rood screen... and a load of neo-Puginian wall-painting wouldn't hurt either.
