A well kept secret!
The Latin Mass Choir were asked to prepare music for an Advent Carol Service.
However, no one told the parish, except by a one-liner in today's newsletter.
Only 5 people attended - outnumbered by the choir of 16 including the director and organist - all of whom had already tired themselves practicing for and singing at Mass this morning and then gone home for lunch (our fatigue was anticipated and appreciated last year when we were fed at the Presbetry) and then made their way back again to give this service, and since whomever was supposed to be organising this event didn't organise any readers, the choristers also had to take turns in going down to the Pulpit to read - which made the service longer since we had to await their return each time before continuing.
Anyway, who's idea was it that, having gone to Mass in the morning - or afternoon if you go to the 1245 (or even the 1115 since that goes on into the afternoon), people might then gladly return for another service during the afternoon? They've probably gone Christmas shopping!
So, basically, apart from the few parishioners in the pews, the choir gave a carol service for itself - for which its members worked hard in preparation, and the organisation of this event was shambolic for any parish - especially one of this size and of such resources.

I don't need to add more to what has been said above. Yes, it was very upsetting singing to an empty church but as the 'What's On' page of the website gives a 3.30pm start of service and today's Newsletter states 3pm, how can we expect the parishioners to turn up on time - if at all.

What a disappointment for the Advent service to turn out like this! I must say I was a bit taken by surprise when the Newsletter arrived at the end of last week by email and I noticed the Advent service there .. and but for that I would have been even more suprised when Ola asked me on Sunday if I was free to come and sing .. sadly I didn't have time .
Not entirely sure where the problem is re. the start time shown for the service - this page and the calendar (which gets its info from this page) do both have it at 3pm but perhaps the formatting of the "What's on" block on the home page need to be clearer so that it's more obvious which time corresponds to which event.
By the way if either of you wants to sign up for an account on this website to add choir events etc. then please do ... I'm sure Bob would be delighted. At present things generally only get added here once they've appeared in the Newsletter. Wouldn't solve the underlying catastrophic failure of publicity and organisation though!
