fair trade

What is Fairtrade?

Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade which traditionally disadvantages the poorest and weakest producers and enables workers in developing countries to receive a fair and sustainable price for their products. Fairtrade ensures that producers are paid a price that covers their costs of production, can benefit from longer-term trading relationships, receive the Fairtrade premium for investment in social, environmental and economic development projects, and can access pre-financing if required.

The FAIRTRADE Mark

The FAIRTRADE Mark is a registered certification label for products sourced from producers in developing countries. The easily recognisable back, green and blue logo denotes that the product meets international Fairtrade standards and that the producers have received a fair deal for their goods. In the UK the Fairtrade Mark is awarded by the Fairtrade Foundation, a registered charity, which was founded in 1992 by CAFOD, Christian Aid, Oxfam, Traidcraft and the World Development Movement, and later joined by the Women’s Institute. To date the Fairtrade Foundation has licensed over 3,000 Fairtrade certified products for sale through retail and catering outlets in the UK.

Fairtrade at Sacred Heart

Sacred Heart became a Fairtrade Parish in 2009, and for many years has supported Fairtrade through regular sales of Fairtrade goods on the second and fourth Sunday of each month after mass. If you are interested in helping with the sales please contact Gaye Hill on 0208 9462174.

As a Fairtrade Parish we agree to

  • Use Fairtrade tea and coffee after services and in meetings
  • Move forward on using other Fairtrade products such as sugar, biscuits and fruit
  • Promote Fairtrade during Fairtrade Fortnight and during the year through events, worship and other activities whenever possible

 Fairtrade Merton

In March 2009 Merton was declared a Fairtrade Borough by the Fairtrade Foundation. This was made possible by residents, local businesses, schools, places of worship and Merton Council using, serving and selling Fairtrade products. The Borough’s Fairtrade Steering Committee meets on a regular basis to continue promoting Fairtrade and encouraging more people to switch to Fairtrade products.
