Jesuit Missions has now established a fund specific to the Jesuit work in Haiti, which is part of the French Canadian Province, who have been working in Haiti for decades. The British Province has already donated £100,000 and is seeking additional funds from the wider Jesuit communities.
From the Jesuit Missions site, they describe the specific appeal:
"The funds will be urgently channelled through our Jesuit contacts in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Unlike others who are trying to help the stricken people of Haiti, we already have an infrastructure on the ground, and so can channel funds more effectively. With the assistance of imported doctors, five crisis centres have been opened and a further two are soon to be operational.
Please give whatever you can in support of those in such desperate need. Every penny of your donation will be passed on, as will all additional gift aid contributions."
I know the generosity of the Sacred Heart Parish is great, humbling me at times. The appeal for Jesuit Missions a few months ago for the area of India devastated from floods was beyond my expectations. I know that we are seeking significant funds within the parish and I want to continue to encourage you in that effort. However, just as the early poor church in the Greek communities contributed to the Jerusalem Church who were in great financial crisis, we must look beyond ourselves. So I encourage you to choose to support the Catholic response to Haiti either through CAFOD or Jesuit Missions.
UPDATE: Please see the America (a Jesuit weekly in the States) article on the expereinces of Br. Jim Boynton, S.J. in Haiti. Within the article is a link to a BBC Worldservice interview of Br. Boynton.

Donation
Please advise me if the donation I have just made to Jesuit Missions will come to you in full plus the Gift Aid.
Thank you
Dear Mrs Butcher,
Thank you for your donation to the Haiti appeal. All funds are being directed to the region through the Jesuits of Latin America, who are co-ordinating the relief effect for funds raised by Jesuit Provinces around the world.
We use Just Giving as it is more cost efficient than providing our own service. Just Giving will pass on your donation in full to JM within 7 days and take a commission from the Gift Aid reclaimed on our behalf. Full details can be found at http://www.justgiving.com/how-justgiving-works/.
Thank you once again for your support.
Regards,
Alan
