Sacred Heart Church, in Wimbledon, a Roman Catholic parish in the Archdiocese of Southwark, and until recently served by the Jesuits of the British Province, welcomes you to our website. As one of the largest parishes in England, we hope this site highlights the dynamic community that has been a place of worship for over a century. At the heart of our parish are the many people of all ages who work, study, pray and share their lives together. We invite and encourage you to explore, discover and visit the Sacred Heart.
It is a time for us to rediscover the joy of the Gospel and to be “set free from sin, sorrow, inner emptiness and loneliness.” (Evangelii Gaudium 1) In this year’s Lenten message to the Church throughout the world, Pope Francis prays that, “...this Lenten season may find the whole Church ready to bear witness, to all those who live in material, moral and spiritual destitution, the Gospel message of the merciful love of God our Father, who is ready to embrace everyone in Christ. We can do this to the extent that we imitate Christ who became poor and enriched us by his poverty.”
Mgr Nicholas Hudson writes:
"I was pleased to be able to announce at all Masses last weekend that Archbishop Peter has appointed to the Parish a third Priest. He is Fr Thaddeus Nwokeji, a Diocesan Priest from Nigeria who has a Doctorate in Moral Theology from Rome; and has been working these last two years at St Simon's Parish, Putney. Fr Thaddeus will be working with us full-time from 15th March as a member of the Parish Pastoral Team. I know you will make him as welcome as you have made Fr Sam and me."
The Finance Committee has now released the parish accounts for 2013. The first page is the Receipts and Payments Account for the year ended 31st December 2013. Page 2 contains analyses of the figures in Sheet 2.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to make Friday night's Handover Mass such a worthy celebration. A large number of people put in a great deal of work to create a beautiful liturgy and a delightful reception afterwards. Thank you to all those individuals who kindly brought food lovingly prepared at home. Wasn't it marvellous to see present so many friends of the parish, both lay and ordained, as well as a huge number of parishioners?
